Mix it Up!

I've been working lots of extra hours lately, so progress is slow but I'm finally getting started with the decor in my guest/sewing room. I have a long way to go, but at least I've cleared enough STUFF to begin work on it.

And the first job at hand -- painting. The cotton candy pink walls worked well with my last scheme, but just won't do for what I have in mind right now.

I had a hard name coming up with a title for this post, though. I thought about things like, "Working with Color" or "Using the Color Wheel", but rejected them....BORING! So I decided to title my post, "Mix it Up", since that's exactly what I did.
You see, I wanted to paint the walls in a nice, creamy
Café-au-Lait...

But this is what I had on hand...

A rather icky shade of greenish yellow.
Now I could have gone out and bought a gallon of paint, but instead, I decided to mix up my own concoction.

As I'm sure you know, red and green are complementary colors on the color wheel, so I added some red craft acrylic to the paint to neutralize the green.

This is what it looked like when I finished stirring.
You can see the difference in the original color and the newly mixed color on the lid.

Now to add some richness...

I mixed in some burnt sienna.

And added some beige sponge paint that I had on hand.

Even while mixing, it was already taking on a nice, creamy Café-au-Lait appearance.

Since, paint is always lighter when wet, I decided to stop adding pigment when it reached the point of looking very creamy and before it took on a caramel color.

This is how the first wall looked after it dried.

I actually did this on Tuesday afternoon, but because of working extra hours was forced to put the
remainder of the room on hold until today. I should finish the walls and hope to get my next project started.
I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Until next time,
Sheilla

  1. Sheilla, you're a gal after my own heart! I looove that you just went forward and mixed your own paint color and by the way, it looks fabulous and just like your
cafe-au-lait...so perfect! I can hardly wait for the reveal! Hugs, Debbie @ Cottage Hann~Me~Downs

  2. I love your new paint color AND that you mixed it yourself. It's very pretty! Once my mother gave me two gallons of paint that was left in a five gallon bucket for a flip house I was working on. I mixed in three more gallons of oops paint and I got a color I have duplicated many times over the years - I loved it.....
